About the Barnett One-Name Study |
Having started looking into
my family back in the 1990's, I chanced upon the Guild of One Name Studies, and
realised that I could maintain a Study for my name with the large numbers of
Barnett entries I was finding at that time. I subsequently set up this site
in 2008. |
Little did I know just how
many entries I would locate - having used a card index I went onto computer
in 1990 with 2000 records, and now have over 100,000. |
I have a large number of
contacts who share my name or who have the name in their own families, and it
is now quite rare for me not to be able to enhance someones knowledge when
they contact me. |
Most of my contacts are in
the UK, but I have quite a number from North America and Australia/New
Zealand. |

The following variations of
the name Barnett are presently included within the database:- |
Barnett Barnet Barnette
BARNETSON |

Census occurences Surname BARNETT Frequency 5922 |

In addition, sometimes the name
has been entered as Barrett or BARTLETT in some parish registers and census
records. For various reasons the name has also been found as BARROTT, Barratt
in census indexes. There is the odd example of it being found as Barnitt, but
these instances are surprisingly rare. |
Some of the countries and
possible foreign origins of Barnetts are England (Barnes, Bernard,
Barnard), Germany (Barnhard/Bernhardt, Barndt), France (Barnard/Bernard),
Italy (Bernardi), Jews from Poland and Russia (Berjinski and other spellings)
Spain and Hispanic countries (Bernardo). I am sure there are many others. |

Origin of the surname |
The name Barnett is thought
to derive from the meaning 'Bar' (son of) Nett (fisherman). However it is
more likely to come from Barnet meaning 'burnt land' as in High Barnet,
Chipping Barnet or Friern Barnet in
Greater London, named with Old English bærnet ‘place cleared by burning’ (a
derivative of bærnan ‘to burn’, ‘to set light to’). The name of the town
appears in early deeds as Bergnet, the Saxon word Bergnet signifies a little
hill, monticulus. |

Data |
My database now extends to
over 100,000 entries, and the main parts of this are as follows :- |
GRO Birth, Marriage and Death
records from 1837 to 2002. |
Census entries - complete from
1841 to 1901 as far as humanly possible! I keep finding entries missed
previously, wrongly indexed in a variety of projects and so on. |
Large numbers of parish
register entries have been extracted from Staffordshire and Worcestershire parishes,
in addition to those entries in the IGI and Vital Records indexes. |
All entries from the US
census up to 1930 are held. |
All entries from the Voters
Roll and Telephone directories (for 2004) are held. |
